Starting Therapy
By taking the time to read this website, you have already taken the first step to ensure your loved one receives quality speech therapy.
No two clients are the same so each case will be addressed individually to identify a treatment plan that is uniquely suited to meet your family's needs.
The next step is to give me a call so that we can discuss your needs. During our telephone conversation, I will ask basic questions to identify your concerns and obtain some background information. I'll want to know the age of the person involved, some developmental history, whether or not he/she has already visited a speech-language pathologist, and most importantly, what you hope will be accomplished by accessing my services.
If, based on our telephone conversation, I believe that I can offer quality speech-language services to your family and you choose to hire me, an initial appointment will be scheduled at a time that is convenient to you. Presently, appointments are offered in my Transcona location or virtually — using a secure, online platform.
The Therapy Process
During our first appointment, I will use some screening tools to evaluate the nature and severity of the problem and identify possible treatment options. I may also ask the parent/caregiver to fill out a questionnaire and may interview the client. Together we will discuss treatment goals and come up with a plan for future sessions. If time permits, therapy to target the goals we discussed may begin already at that first session.
The number of sessions required to improve communication skills will vary depending on the number of treatment goals to address, the nature of the problem, and the motivation of the client and his/her caregivers. Families may also wish to limit or stagger the number of sessions based on conditions of insurance or other financial obligations.
Homework will typically be assigned between treatment sessions. When families diligently complete the assigned homework, goals are generally met more quickly.
